Frequently Asked Questions About Curriculum

Who is HighReach Learning and how long have they been in business?
HighReach Learning is an early childhood publishing company. We create and publish developmentally appropriate curriculum materials for children 12 months through 5 years of age and teaching resources for children 3 months through 14 years of age. HighReach Learning has been in business since 1986.

What philosophy are your curriculum programs based on?
HighReach Learning's curriculum programs are based on a whole-child philosophy. We create materials that address all aspects of development: social, emotional, cognitive, and physical. We emphasize a blend of teacher-facilitated and child-initiated activities. Every year our curriculum programs are rewritten to meet the changing needs of children, and to keep the material fresh and up-to-date and taking into account state and national early childhood learning standards.

How much time does the curriculum take each day?
The amount of time you spend will vary with the specific age-appropriate curriculum you select. Most are written so they can be used either in a half-day or full-day setting.

I teach a mixed-age group with 2-5 year olds. Do you have a curriculum that will meet the needs of these children?
Yes! Our Curriculum for Threes is designed to be a good, strong preschool program. It covers basic skills such as colors, numbers, and shapes. The activities in this particular program are designed to be easily adaptable for younger and older children.

Many of the other curricula on the market contain all the materials I need, such as cotton balls, crafts sticks, etc. Does your curriculum contain all of these materials?
At HighReach Learning, we have determined that it is more economical for you to purchase such materials than it would be for us to include them. Therefore, you will not find these types of "craft" materials included in your monthly program. However, you will find that our curriculum includes more teaching materials such as colorful wall displays, story props, and easy-to-use classroom games. Also, all of the materials you need for each child are available for the number of children for which you order; there is no copying required.

How will I know which additional materials I need to gather or purchase every month?
Every activity includes a Materials Checklist. There is also a comprehensive Supplies/Preparation List which details materials you may need to purchase or prepare for one month. Based on the activities you wish to implement, you may or may not need all of the materials listed, and alternate items may be substituted at your discretion. In addition to the items that may need to be purchased, we use many household materials that would normally be thrown away. Items such as paper-towel rolls, old newspapers and magazines, and empty food boxes are frequently used. The Training Manual lists items you can expect to use throughout the year. Finally, the Family Letters sent with various curriculum programs lists items families may be able to supply from home.

What is the difference between Curriculum for Pre-K: Framework and Curriculum for Pre-K: Butterflies? The most noticeable difference between these two curricula would be in the Children's Materials - Curriculum for Pre-K: Butterflies includes the option to purchase Learning Fun Pages each month. Curriculum for Pre-K: Framework does not offer Learning Fun Pages, nor the option to purchase them. Instead, children receive story booklets, Special Me! Reports, and News from Home Reports. In addition, Curriculum for Pre-K: Framework includes activities for children who are working below a four-year old level and offers adaptations for special needs and bilingual materials. Curriculum for Pre-K: Butterflies includes only activities for children at the four-year-old level. Finally, Curriculum for Pre-K: Framework includes materials to help Head Start teachers document compliance with the Head Start Performance Standards. While Curriculum for Pre-K: Butterflies achieves similar objectives, it is less directly tied to the Head Start program.

What is the difference between Curriculum for Threes and Curriculum for Pre-K: Framework? Curriculum for Threes is written to meet the needs of 3 year old children. Curriculum for Pre-K: Framework is written to meet the needs of older 3 year old children and those who are 4 years of age. Curriculum for Pre-K: Framework also introduces the letters of the alphabet and does not include the Learning Fun Pages, which Curriculum for Threes customers have the option of receiving. A more literacy-based curriculum, Curriculum for Pre-K: Framework includes Learning Objectives which can be tracked using our ongoing assessment software, while Curriculum for Threes does not include this assessment feature. Curriculum for Threes and Curriculum for Pre-K: Framework both receive a Developmental Skills Checklist each quarter to send home to parents. An Observation Checklist is included with Curriculum for Pre-K: Framework for teachers to use to track ongoing progress for each child.

How is your curriculum set up – weekly, monthly, yearly?
HighReach Learning creates monthly, theme-based curriculum programs. Each month is designed around a theme, with related concepts and skills woven into the theme, and each day of that month has suggested activities. You may choose to have the curriculum sent to you each month during the school year or on a month-by-month basis. We also have summer curriculum programs that help reinforce the skills and concepts learned throughout the year. In order to provide a well-rounded curriculum, HighReach Learning introduces specific skills and concepts each month, such as colors, numbers, shapes, letters, and more.

Can I order for just one month?
Of course you can! You don’t sign any long-term contracts. You decide what months you would like to use the programs, and how long during the year you’d like to continue the programs.

Do I pay for the whole year at once?
No. If you are a new customer, we ask that you pay in advance for your first month’s order only, either by credit card or COD. After your first month, we will send you an invoice as well as a return payment envelope with each monthly shipment. Or, you may choose to have your credit card billed each month, and not have to worry about sending in a check every month.

After I place my order, how long until I receive it?
We ship our programs 30 days in advance of the month you’ll need it. For example, we will ship our September curriculum beginning August 1. If you place your order in the middle of or at the end of the month, you can expect to receive your program within 14 days of placing your order.

If the number of children I teach changes during the year, can I change the number I order for? Can I change the curriculum during the year?
Yes! You may change both the order size and type of curriculum program during the year if you need. All you have to do is call 1-800-729-9988 and one of our customer service representatives will be more than happy to make any changes to your order.

If I call during the month of September to place an order for the month of September, is it too late?
Of course not. You may call at anytime during the month to place an order for the current month.

Can I cancel my order at any time?
Yes you can. For any reason, you may call our customer service department to cancel your order. Because you are not tied into a long-term contract, you may cancel at any time.

What kind of guarantee and refund policy do you offer?
If you are not completely satisfied with our curriculum programs, you may return any of our products within ten days of receipt and you are only responsible for the original and return shipping costs. Also, we have a procedure for returning unused, current program materials. Our customer service representatives will gladly help you with that procedure.
