Assessing Children's Needs

How do I plan lessons based on children’s needs?
Let us show you how you can easily determine your learning goals with our learning objectives and assessment recommendations. The HighReach Planning Cycle can be broken down into three steps.

  1. Assess Gather information on children’s development and interests. What are your goals and objectives for their conceptual and skill development? Use our learning objectives to determine learning goals, which are also linked to ongoing assessments. What do they already know about this topic? Use the R-E-I or K-W-L Method to capture children’s interests on the topic of study. Also look for ways to include families’ cultural perspectives and community events.

  2. Plan – Planning is ongoing and evolves as children explore deeper, extending their own capabilities. Once you have completed the R-E-I or K-W-L Method, customize our concept web based on what children said they know and want to know. Start where children have expressed some prior knowledge and wonder. Use our Learning Experiences Guide to locate experiences you think will intrigue children based on their background knowledge and curiosities.

  3. Implement – Have fun! Implement the learning experiences with our topic-related support materials to create a truly integrated, active learning environment. Reflect and assess learning experiences so that even more purposeful planning and learning may occur.
